Major League Baseball
Born in Ogden, Pennsylvania, John graduated from Chester High School in 1915. He played basketball and baseball and threw the shot put and competed in the long jump for the track and field team at Chester. He was a pitcher for the Chester team that went 15-2 in his senior year.Warren, who was three years younger than John and also pitched at Chester High and Swarthmore College, pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics (1922-24), and the Washington Senators (1924-26), compiling an 18-19 record.
John played basketball and baseball at Swarthmore College. In his senior year, Swarthmore lost only one baseball game. He signed with the NY Giants and pitched in five games in 1918. For the next 10 years, he played in the minor leagues, including posting a 31-8 record with Balt of the Int League. After seven straight Int championship seasons, he was purchased by the St. Louis Browns and had a 15-16 record. He also pitched for the Browns in 1929, then pitched for the Cin Reds in 1931-32. He finished his career with a 25-34 major league record after compiling a 216-94 record in the Int League. He also appeared in one World Series game with the Senators in 1924, starting the final game against the NY Giants, which the Senators won in 12 innings. After retiring as a player, John became general manager of the Balt team (1933-40), then purchased the Elmira (N.Y.) team of the Eastern League. He taught and coached briefly at Swarthmore Prep, then spent 25 years as a scout .
