The
brilliant, quick, agile running back at St. James HS in Chester,
selected All-Delco, All-Catholic, All-State, and HS All-American
while leading 1953 undefeated Bulldogs to the City Championship.
Dick was offered over 50 Division 1 scholarships and chose North
Carolina State Univ. At NC Dick became its most prolific running
back, setting records in rushing, scoring, and touchdowns. Dick
was selected All-ACC in 1955, 1956, and 1957 was named the ACC Player
of the Year. Dick took the Wolfpack to National ranking w/ 1 loss.
He was then named First team All-American UPI & AP. Dick was
drafted in the 1958 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers but was traded
to the Pittsburg Steelers. After a year , Dick was traded to the
NY Titans/Jets. An All-Purpose halfback, flanker and return specialist,
Dick ranked each year among the league leaders in punt and kickoff
returns. Dicks name appears 5 times in the NFL All-Time Record Book
for Punt Return Touchdowns, league leader in yards, and average
yards per game per game season. But perhaps Dicks greatest NFL feat
was in 1962, when he was named All-Pro for the NY Jets and became
only the 3rd player in NFL history to net over 2,000 yds in 1 season.
He clocked 2,147 total yards while playing in only 12 games. Dick
was named the 1962 NY Jets team MVP. His jersey was the first ever
retired at St James and only 4th in 110 yrs of NC State football.
