Born in Lansdowne, Delaware County, Pa. Later
moved to and grew up at 45 Bailey Road, Yeadon, Delaware County,
Pa. the oldest of 12 children.1930 Rowed number 7 seat in Penn AC
eight oared crew which won the world championship in Liege, Belgium
with a world record time of 5:18:4 over 2000 meters. Jack Kelly,
Sr., described this crew as "the greatest combination in the
history of rowing" having won 31 consecutive races between
1929-1931 including 3 national championships, the Canadian championship
and the world championship in Liege as mentioned above. 1936 Represented
the United States in the Olympics in the single sculls winning the
bronze medal for 3rd place despite being interfered with by the
British sculler. The University of Washington won the only other
US rowing medal. 1937 Won the Canadian Henley double sculls at St.
Catharine's, Canada. 1975 Inducted into the National Association
of Amateur Oarsmen Rowing Hall of Fame.
