A 1976 graduate of Springfield High School, he was an All-Delco selection in football (offensive line) and baseball (catcher). He was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round (19th pick overall) of the June 1976 free agent draft and played 15 seasons as a catcher in the major leagues with the Dodgers (1980-92), San Diego Padres (1993) and Texas Rangers (1994), compiling a .259 batting average in 1,441 games. Dodgers' all-time leader in games caught (1,395). He had a .998 career fielding percentage and ranks among the top 15 on the all-time catchers list in putouts and total chances. Established reputation as one of toughest catchers at blocking home plate. Named to the National League All-Star Team in 1989 and 1990 and became the first Dodger to start at catcher since Roy Campanella in 1954 when he was starter in 1990 game at Wrigley Field. Caught no-hitters thrown by Fernando Valenzuela (June 20, 1990 vs. St. Louis) and Kevin Gross (Aug. 17, 1992 vs. San Francisco). Was member of Dodgers' 1981 and 1988 World Series championship teams. He hit a home run in Game 1 of 1981 League Championship Series against Montreal and homered in ninth inning of Game 4 of 1988 League Championship Series against New York Mets. Named manager of Anaheim Angels Nov. 18, 1999.
