Born 8/9/52 : Heisman Trophy Winner
John was a first team All-Catholic and All-Delco selection from
Monsignor Bonner in 1969. He matriculated at Penn State and accomplished
it all. John won the Maxwell Award, Heisman Trophy, and was chosen
All-America. In Upper Darby, a parade in his honor was attended
by 50,000 people. As a senior at Penn State, he gained 1,522 yards
on 286 carries as the Nittany Lions rolled to an undefeated season.
John's N.F.L. career lasted nine years, five with the Los Angeles
Rams and four with the San Diego Chargers. He carried the ball a
total of 924 times for 2,951 yards. With the Chargers, John spent
three seasons battling a groin injury and retired after carrying
the ball just once in 1983. A member of the College Football Hall
of Fame, John's Heisman acceptance speech, where he dedicated his
award to his dying brother Joey, is one of the most memorable in
the history of college sports.
