| A 1914 graduate
of Haverford High School, he lived in the Penn Pines section of Lansdowne
after his retirement from professional baseball. He was a catcher
at Haverford High but played second base and third base for most of
his pro career. He played major league baseball for 22 years, playing
for the Phil Athletics from 1918-32 and the Chic White Sox from 1933-39.
He played almost 2,300 games, compiled a .280 career batting average
and drove in 1,108 runs. He batted .288 in 18 career WS games and
drove in 11 runs and helped the Athletics win the World Series in
1929 and 1930. In 1933, he was the starting third baseman in the first
All-Star Game, which was played at Comiskey Park in Chicago, and scored
the first AS Game run. He and Babe Ruth were the only players with
more than 1 hit in that game. He was the manager of six major league
teams: Chi White Sx (1934-46), Phil Athletics (1951-53), Balt Orioles
(1954, their first season), Cin Reds (1958), Det Tigers (1959-60)
and Clev Indians. |
