1968: She postpones
beginning her senior year at Radnor to compete with the United States
swim team at the Summer Games in Mexico City, which were held in
October. She wins a gold and bronze medal, helping the American
4 x 100-meter freestyle relay team set an Olympic record. Following
the 1968 Olympics, she said she wanted to retire from competitive
swimming. She eventually changed her mind and returned for the 1972
Olympic Games in Munich, Germany. 1972: Swims the third leg as the
American 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay team wins gold medal and
breaks Olympic record in Munich. As the team stands on the medal
platform to accept its awards, she fulfills promise she made to
her teammates by whistling the national anthem.
