A three-sport standout
at Springfield High, he was All-Delco quarterback, an All-Delco
basketball player and a pro prospect as a baseball pitcher. At Princeton
University, he was twice named All-East and All-Ivy League in basketball
and scored 1,321 points to rank sixth on the school's all-time list.
In 1971, he joined the Portland Trail Blazers as the eighth selection
in the first round of the draft and was named co-Rookie of the Year
in the National Basketball Association with Dave Cowens of the Boston
Celtics. He became one of eight NBA rookies to score more than 2,000
points. He was a member of the all-rookie team with Cowens, Pete
Maravich, Calvin Murphy and Bob Lanier. Twice in his NBA career
he scored 51 points in a game, and his uniform number (45) was retired
by the Trail Blazers. Knee injuries cut his pro career short, and
he retired in 1976 after attempting a comeback with the Atlanta
Hawks. After several years in the Trail Blazers' front office, he
became an executive with the Sacramento Kings in 1995. In 1999 and
2001 he was named NBA Executive of the Year.
